Description: I found the car in early 1980, abandoned behind an old gas station south of Columbus, Ohio. I spent about 1 1/2 years restoring the 343 and tried to keep everything as original as possible, however, I did change the color from the original Pacific to Volkswagen Polar Silver. I decided to compromise during the fall of 2000 by building a 2017cc torque monster engine designed for high torque, not hi rev power.

An interesting thing I discovered about this car is that it may be the only type 34 directly exported to the USA by Volkswagen. When I wrote to the factory in 1986 to find out it's birth date, the letter stated that it was exported to the USA. I thought they must have been mistaken since nearly everyone familiar with these vehicles has mentioned that none were imported to the USA. In 1993 Lee Hedges convinced me to write to the Karmann factory to see what they said. T! heir reply was that the car was exported to VWOA! We believe that it may have been exported to the USA for some type of promotional purpose, or a high ranking Volkswagen official wanted one.
